2020 National Mask Festival

Papua New Guinea is a very diverse country with over 800 different languages, many different and unique cultures and traditions.

We the people of East New Britain are known for our rich cultural heritage endowed in our spiritual realm of our ancestors and passed down from generations. Our culture is driven by our ancestral spirits represented by rituals, melodies, chants, rhythms, and elaborate masks. East New Britain is the only province in Papua New Guinea that still widely uses and accepts its traditional shell money (tabu).

The first day of the festival will include the 'Kinavai' - the arrival of the Tolai 'Tubuans' and 'Duk-Duks' at dawn.  Witness the traditional Tolai shell money exchanges that mark the opening of the festival.

At night visit the Baining people who live in the mountains and watch in amazement as men perform harrowing dances through blazing fires.

This itinerary has been designed to showcase our unique cultures, elaborate masks, arts and traditions, learn about our wartime histories, enjoy our breathtaking sceneries, mingle with some of the friendliest people in the world, explore our fascinating volcanoes and it brings you closest to dolphins in the wild.
